Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority (SVSWA) and the City of Salinas are partnering to give residents an opportunity to learn how to compost at three free workshops that will be hosted in English and Spanish here in Salinas. Composting is a form of recycling through a natural process of decomposition of leftover food scraps and leaves that have been placed into a bin.

“Organic waste” includes things like food, green material, landscape and pruning waste, lumber, wood, and paper products, among other things. Composting can help households and the environment by:

  • Reducing waste
  • Improving soil quality
  • Conserving water
  • Reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides

Attendees can obtain a free composting bin. SVSWA will also provide free compost available to take home that was created from recycled organic material from our community! Be sure to bring a sturdy bucket or container, shovel, and gloves if you would like to take some home.
