The City Manager is appointed by the City Council to manage the City's administrative responsibilities and delivery of public services. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the City, the City Manager provides support to the City Council with implementation of policies, programs and initiatives. The Office of the City Manager is responsible for the management of the Salinas Municipal Corporation consistent with the policy direction established by the City Council and California Law and is part of the City's Administration Department, which includes the Office of the City Clerk and Community Relations Team.
René Mendez has over 30 years of State and local government experience. Prior to his appointment as City Manager of Salinas in May 2024, he served as City Manager of Watsonville for two years and Gonzales for 17 years. René holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from California State University, Stanislaus, and a Master of Arts Degree in Public Policy from Duke University.
