News Date:
June 18, 2020

Project crews have begun work on new sidewalks, curb, gutter and ADA-compliant ramps. Crews will be working on intersections along West Alisal Street, at Acacia St, Homestead Ave, Church St, Lincoln Ave, Salinas St, Main St, Monterey St, Pajaro St, and Front St, over the next 3 months. Please expect some sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours at these intersections for 3-4 weeks while crews demo, form, and reconstruct walkways.

Beginning the week of June 22nd, construction crews will also begin work on the traffic signals at the intersections of Acacia St at West Alisal St and Homestead Ave at West Alisal St. This work may cause the existing traffic signals to be temporarily turned off. Please remember: if a traffic signal is off, or flashing red, drivers must treat the intersection as an all-way stop and proceed when they know other turning and/or approaching vehicles, bicycles, or pedestrians have stopped. A blacked-out or flashing red traffic signal works the same as an all-way stop intersection.

The Contractor and City Staff are carefully working together during the State of Emergency. Based on the Monterey County Health Department's Order, these construction projects are exempt from the Shelter-in-Place. Projects will continue as planned, construction crews and city staff will all strive to implement the County Health Department's recommendation to help flatten the curve.

The City and Contractor are committed to completing this work quickly, efficiently and safely. While construction activity is in progress, there may be some delays. Working hours will be between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Downtown Complete Streets Project are expected to be completed in early 2021.

Project Background

The Downtown Complete Streets project intends to make the corridor on West Alisal Street and Lincoln Avenue a more safe, efficient and complete street. The project will reconfigure the roadway from 4-lanes to 2-lanes with channelized left turn lanes. It includes bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements, signal modernization and high-speed fiber optic communication on West Alisal Street from Blanco Road to Front Street.

Funding for this project is provided by the Highway and Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), Regional Surface Transportation Program (RSTP), and Measure X, a sales tax measure approved by Monterey County voters.
