Main Street Streetscape Project
Destination Downtown:
The Main Street Streetscape Project is one of the first steps in implementing the Downtown Vibrancy Plan. The Plan was adopted by City Council in 2015 and provides the foundation for improving public safety, supplying important residential and business infrastructure, and providing other improvements for the downtown area. The Project includes reconstruction of sidewalks, installation of ADA compliant pedestrian access ramps, drainage improvements, lighting and electrical improvements, utility relocations, traffic signal modifications, signing and markings for two way traffic, high speed fiber optic communication, landscaping with irrigation improvements, a district arch, and other public use improvements.
Project Location:
Main Street between Central Avenue and E San Luis Street.
Construction Schedule:
Project completion check-off/final approval is expected in May/June. Construction schedule adjustments may be necessary due to delays in receiving products needed for construction, or due to weather or other unanticipated events.
Project Background:
The Vibrancy Plan included a vision and goals to improve the Main Street corridor within the downtown area to make circulation improvements that support the vibrancy plan goals.
Among suggested improvements are converting Main Street from a one-way street to two-way and enhancing the pedestrian environment to include amenities such as lighting, security, outdoor seating opportunities, and place making. A master plan was developed for the Main Street project to serve as the framework of the project design. Input received from over thirty meetings conducted by the City provided guidance for the design of the project.
Project Cost / Budget/Funding:
The Main Street Streetscape Project is funded primarily from voter approved Measure X funds. The project includes plans for a District Arch. The City of Salinas and Rotary have agreed to a 50/50 collaboration to fully fund the arch. Total funds allocated to the project is $12 million.
